What is an Intention Layer™?

By SavorPublished Updated

An Intention Layer is a place to keep what you are trying to bring about, not just a list of what you have already worked out. An intention can arrive as a partial thought — a question, a possibility, something you are not ready to decide — and it keeps its thread as you add to it or change direction. A task manager tracks what you need to do; an Intention Layer holds what you mean to do until it is ready to become a task.

Why ‘intention’ and not ‘task’

A task has already been decided: it has a verb, a next step, usually a date. Most of what occupies us has not reached that stage. "Look into that course." "Maybe call her about the flat." "That thing the teacher mentioned." These are intentions, and forcing them into a task list too early either creates false commitments or loses them entirely.

How an intention becomes a task

It gets a when and a next step. Until then it is held, visible if you look, quiet if you do not. Some intentions become tasks in an hour; some sit in Later for a month and then resolve themselves. Both are fine. The layer's job is to keep the thread, not to force the outcome.

What it is not

It is not a task manager, though tasks pass through it. It is not a notes app, because everything in it is oriented towards a when. And it is not a habit tracker: there are no streaks, no badges and no score, because an intention is not a performance.

Alongside a calendar and a to-do list

A calendar holds commitments with times. A to-do list holds decided actions. An Intention Layer sits before both: it is where things live while they are still becoming something. When one is ready, it can move on, for example to your calendar.

The shape of the layer: Now, Soon, Later

Intentions sort themselves by when they matter more naturally than by topic. Now is today, or anything undated that is waiting on you. Soon is the next couple of days. Later is everything after. Three lanes are enough to see what needs you without seeing everything.

Savor is an Intention Layer™

Savor is a calm app for intentions and reminders. Speak, snap or type; each becomes a clear card that comes back when it matters. Cards live in Now, Soon or Later, carry reminders you control, can be edited, moved or let go, and can be added to your calendar when they are ready. See how a thought is captured, or start on the homepage.
